      This works presents the development of a testrig for wind turbine emulation, including the conversion system from wind to electrical energy. The complete emulation test-rig has a driving element, in charge of providing the torque/speed profiles, corresponding to real data of wind availability in a given geographical location. The driving element, in this case a 3.3 kW DC machine, is coupled to the generator, in this work a 4.0 kW @ 50 Hz double feed induction generator (DFIG). Both electrical machines are feed from power electronic converters, an H-bridge for the DC machine, and a dual three-phase converter for the induction machine. The switching elements in these converters are insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBT). Two heat-sinks are used for the power electronics, one for a rectifier/H-bride feeding the DC machine, and the other for the dual converter. The speed at the common shaft is measured using an optical-encoder. The control signals, for the emulator, are measured using two sensor cards, providing up to 16 signals between currents and voltages. Both converters are controlled from a DSP based board coupled to an FPGA board, providing the high amount of processing power required by the different control techniques. The converters are controlled using pulse width modulators with adjustable carrier frequency, for this work a 10 kHz carrier is selected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

      The vision of Vehicular Cloud Computing (VCC) is to harness the wealthy resources contributed by groups of vehicles to enable innovative information services on the road. We present an approach to support VCC on top of a virtualization layer, with the vehicles cooperating to create an infrastructure of virtual nodes that enable persistent storage of cloud state information.We present the architecture and the main procedures of the virtualization layer, along with simulation results for the new computing and networking model named Vehicular Cloud Networking (VCN).

      Abstract: This paper presents two model-based fault-tolerant control design strategies for a Diesel Engine Generator (DEG) working as a master generation unit in an islanded microgrid consisting of a hybrid wind-diesel-photovoltaic power system with a Battery Storage System (BSS). A Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme and a Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC) scheme have been selected for precise and stable voltage and frequency regulation in the DEG. A Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) module is added to the MPC structure, in order to recon gure the control strategy when actuator faults in the DEG are present. MRAC is used in combination with a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller tuned by a Genetic Algorithm (GA). Improved performance over a baseline controller, IEEE type 1 Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR), is achieved in a developed realistic simulation environment based on MATLAB/Simulink.

      According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of 2012 esophageal cancer is the eighth-most common cancer globally with 456,000 new cases during the year. One of the triggers of the esophageal cancer is the hiatus hernia, and currently, the frequency disease increases with age, from 10% in patients younger than 40 years to 70% in patients older than 70 years old. Given the above, the aim of this paper is to provide a support tool in the presumptive diagnosis of the hiatus hernia. In the proposed approach we have used two kind of descriptors to provide hiatus hernia's presumptive diagnosis: a first one based on color spaces (RGB, HSV, CIELab and CIELuv) and a second one based on texture descriptors (Local Binary Pattern Histograms). During the experiments, we have tested two kinds of classifiers: K Nearest Neighbor and Random Forest, on a corpus of 48 real cases of images of healthy patients and patients suffering from hiatus hernia. The results are promising, achieving 83% accuracy in classifying the disease.

      The number of the elderly worldwide has risen to 600 million in recent years, however, not all of them have the opportunity to receive adequate care. This situation is more critical in developing countries, where the access to autonomous-support systems for the elderly is either too expensive or not yet available. Given the above, this paper presents the design and development process of SA3M (Autonomous Support System for the elderly, from the Spanish, Sistema Autónomo de Apoyo al Adulto Mayor), an interactive robot to provide support for the elderly, and people suffering from physical impairments. This robot implements a novel approach that uses a fuzzy logic based control system, facial recognition and automatic speech recognition. Given that the robot is designed using open source software and hardware, making the cost of SA3M very affordable. Finally, the initial experiments conducted to test the accuracy in facial recognition and automatic speech recognition are presented in this paper, which produced promising results

      Online social networks are largely failing to engage people in relevant interactions with people, contents or resources in their physical environment. We motivate the potential of automatically establishing sporadic social networks among people (acquaintances or strangers) who happen to be physically close to one another at a certain moment. We present the design of one platform intended to provide solutions from the lowest level of establishing ad-hoc connections among nearby mobile devices, up to the highest level of automatically identifying the most relevant pieces of information to deliver at any time. A number of application scenarios are presented, along with conclusions from redesigning a former system that delivered immersive learning experiences in museums according to the constructs of the sporadic social networks.

      The scenarios envisaged for the paradigm of vehicular cloud computing (VCC) have been limited by the challenges derived from the mobility of the vehicles, to the point that most of the proposals in the literature merely deal with vehicles in parking lots, stuck in traffic jams or moving as a flock for a long time. We present an approach to overcome those limitations by engaging the vehicles in collaboration to emulate an infrastructure of stationary virtual nodes, which can be made responsible for computing, sensing, storage and communication tasks. We present the architecture and the main procedures of the proposal, along with the results of simulations of the VCC service model known as Network as a Service (NaaS).

      According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in developing countries around 23% of malignancies are caused by infectious agents. The infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria seems to be a major cause of stomach cancer (80%). An early diagnosis of gastritis may help decrease the risk of gastric cancer and other complications such as gastric ulcers. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the probability of providing specialists a diagnostic support tool based on computer vision. We used twenty-four endoscopic images of healthy patients and thirty-five images of patients suffering from gastritis to perform an automatic classification process. The suggested approach uses Local Binary Patterns (LBP), texture descriptors, and certain classifiers to perform the automatic classification. The results are promising and show 83% precision in identifying the disease.

      A control system of a computer¿s cursor by recording eye movement using electro-oculographs (EOG) as its principle is presented in this paper. The EOG is the technique that allows detection of the angular displacement of the eye due to corneal-retinal potential present in the eyeball. The aim of this paper is to lay a foundation for the development of a complete systems support for both communication and in the mobilization of people with disabilities. The EOC signal processing involves three stages: acquisition, digitization and processing software. Finally, it is possible to control the computer cursor horizontally and vertically along the respective eye movements.

      A new topology for a two-phase shunt active power filter using a voltage source converter is proposed. The converter is controlled with a predictive control algorithm based in a discrete mathematical model of the system which allows to minimize the quadratic error between the lines currents and the reference currents. The whole system is tested with simulations and with a prototype experimental setup, showing its effectiveness in the compensation of current harmonics produced by two-phase nonlinear loads.

      In this paper we propose a complete approach to improve the web accessibility in Ecuador through the adoption of web accessibility policies and the creation of a web accessibility observatory. In the first stage we made a preliminary study with disabled people to determine their main needs and goals. In the second stage we have created a corpus of web pages and have proposed a new metric to classify web pages according to their accessibility level. In the final stage we have implemented the main modules of the web accessibility observatory and have performed an automatic process of validation of the created corpus, using K-Means algorithm. The results are promising and provide important ideas for future work. Keywords: web accessibility; observatory; WCAG 2.0; W3C; K-Means; usability.

      A fuzzy controller to support older adults should be robust and respond effectively to real-life situations such as illumination changes, ambient noise, and decision making in critical situations. Following this approach, this paper presents the general design of  ¿SA3M¿, an autonomous support system for older adults that implements facial recognition, voice response and the use of various sensors to prevent or alert dangerous situations (gas leaks, fires, etc.). Furthermore, this paper addresses the problem of automatic microphone sensitivity control (Automatic Gain Control) in the processing of voice commands. To validate the proposed approach, the fuzzy controller was tested with a wide range of ambient noise levels and produced promising results.

      En este trabajo se presenta un modelo de plataforma de software para desarrollar y evaluar los algoritmos de detección de plagio. La plataforma se basa en un diseño modular escalable, que implementa un conjunto de servicios que posibilitan realizar automáticamente tareas como: análisis sintáctico y semántico a través de WordNet y Freeling, extracción automática de texto de múltiples formatos de archivos (PDF, Word y texto), extracción de contenido de páginas web (empleando algunos motores de búsqueda como Google, Yandex, Yahoo, Bing), el almacenamiento, la carga y el uso de algoritmos de detección de plagio. Estos servicios permiten a un programador desarrollar el código centrando el esfuerzo en el diseño del algoritmo y la base matemática/estadística. Actualmente, la plataforma se probó usando varias consultas de texto (n-gramas), y los resultados de rendimiento son prometedores.

      This paper presents an approach to automatically generate personalized plans for Speech and Language Therapy on children, based on five speech and language areas: linguistic formulation, oral structure and function, receptive language, expressive language and hearing. The approach relies on an implementation of the Partition Around Medoids (PAM) algorithm, which takes into account the profile of each child, and generates multi-level (hierarchical) clusters based on several distance measures. The new plans are created as per a K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) criterion, combining elements from the five areas. This approach has been used in the assessment of 53 children with different disabilities, with promising results verified by expert therapists.

      Two methods for the estimation of the DC voltages in the capacitors associated to the DC buses in a cascaded multilevel converter topology are analyzed. To reduce the number of voltage sensors, available information from inductor currents and line voltage sensors is used as input to a discrete time model of the converter. Additionally, information from the switching state of each converter's cell is used allowing an estimation of voltages in each capacitor. Both methods are developed, implemented and simulated for a 9 level three-phase cascaded multilevel converter when it is operated as a controlled rectifier at unity power factor. The analyzed methods have low computational cost allowing its implementation in real time.

      El presente trabajo muestra los pasos seguidos, para la implementación del sistema de control de un inversor multinivel. El estudio parte de la topología de fuentes independientes utilizada, luego se describe la implementación del algoritmo de consideraciones geométricas usado y los sistemas de monitoreo y protección en una placa basada en FPGA. Por último se presentan los resultados de la puesta en funcionamiento del sistema completo, con la medición de la tensión y la frecuencia obtenidas a la salida del inversor, y el THD en la corriente y tensión en la carga, el cual fue alrededor del 7% con una carga resistiva, e inferior al 3% en un motor asíncrono.

      Many information services envisaged for the future of vehicle communications rely on the wired Internet infrastructure to download content from remote servers, and then on peer-to-peer, opportunistic networking to deliver the content to the pertinent nodes. We present an approach to support individualized access to web contents from vehicular ad hoc networks, based on a virtualization layer that engages the mobile nodes in collaboration to emulate a reliable infrastructure of stationary virtual nodes. We prove by simulation experiments that this approach achieves better performance than reference works in the literature.

      El aumento constante de las cargas no lineales conectadas a la red de alimentación, provocan problemas como altos índices de distorsión armónica y pérdida de eficiencia debidos al bajo factor de potencia. Una de las formas de mejorar esta situación, es la utilización de filtros activos de potencia (APF). Se desarrolla un filtro multinivel para una red bifásica, con la característica principal de inclusión del neutro en el filtrado logrando un equilibrio entre fases y neutro. Obteniendo como resultado que la forma de onda de la corriente que circula por la red eléctrica sea senoidal (bajo factor armónico). Estructuralmente el filtro, en su sistema de potencia, consta de dos puentes inversores o dos etapas por fase, para la carga o descarga de los dispositivos almacenadores de energía, que para el presente caso es de tipo capacitivo, obteniendo así cinco niveles de tensión por fase. En lo que corresponde al sistema de control del filtro está basado en un control predictivo y adaptativo. Se hace la predicción del estado de conmutación de los IGBT¿s de los inversores en base a los cálculos de la función costo de corriente y la comparación con una corriente de referencia que depende de la carga de la red. Una vez implementado el filtro se comprobó el cumplimiento de los objetivos, se demostró que existe una reducción en el THD de corriente, además se dio la corrección deseada en la forma de onda de la corriente y del voltaje, mejorando así la eficiencia de la red.

      In this work the design and control of a four-phase induction machine (4P-IM) is addressed. The 4P-IM is controlled using a four-phase voltage source inverter (4P-VSI) with a generalization of the classic direct torque control (DTC) scheme. An analysis of the available valid switching states and voltage space vectors is developed and a switching table is obtained. Finally, the system's fault tolerant characteristics are briefly considered for operation with gate suppression in one IGBT. In this case, operation is still possible with the use of switching strategy that employs the remaining space vectors available during the fault.

      This paper presents a comparison of two different adaptive control schemes for improving the performance of a hybrid wind-diesel power system in an islanded microgrid configuration against the baseline controller, IEEE type 1 automatic voltage regulator (AVR). The first scheme uses a model reference adaptive controller (MRAC) with a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller tuned by a genetic algorithm (GA) to control the speed of the diesel engine (DE) for regulating the frequency of the power system and uses a classical MRAC for controlling the voltage amplitude of the synchronous machine (SM). The second scheme uses a MRAC with a PID controller tuned by a GA to control the speed of the DE, and a MRAC with an artificial neural network (ANN) and a PID controller tuned by a GA for controlling the voltage amplitude of the SM. Different operating conditions of the microgrid and fault scenarios in the diesel engine generator (DEG) were tested: 1) decrease in the performance of the diesel engine actuator (40% and 80%), 2) sudden connection of 0.5 MW load, and 3) a 3-phase fault with duration of 0.5 seconds. Dynamic models of the microgrid components are presented in detail and the proposed microgrid and its fault-tolerant control (FTC) are implemented and tested in the Simpower Systems of MATLAB/Simulink® simulation environment. The simulation results showed that the use of ANNs in combination with model-based adaptive controllers improves the FTC system performance in comparison with the baseline controller.

      This paper presents two model-based approaches for designing control strategies in order to integrate a diesel generator as frequency and voltage leader in an islanded microgrid configuration. The selected microgrid configuration is composed of a hybrid wind-diesel system with a battery storage system (BSS). A model predictive control (MPC) scheme and a model reference adaptive control (MRAC) scheme are selected for this task, due to its flexibility and capability for handling constraints and fault-tolerance, respectively, which is helpful for smart grid (SG) architectures to achieve reduced fuel consumption and with and enhanced reliability and integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into the electrical network. A constrained fuel consumption strategy has been implemented in the diesel engine generator (DEG) controller with the help of MPC strategy and fault-tolerance is achieved with MRAC. Different operating conditions of the microgrid were simulated: 1) diesel-only generation, 2) wind turbine generator (WTG) ignition, 3) sudden connection of 0.5 MW load, and 4) a 3-phase fault with duration of 0.5 seconds. Improved performance over a baseline controller, IEEE type 1 automatic voltage regulator (AVR), is achieved. Dynamic models of the network components are presented in details on design and implementation of the microgrid configuration in Matlab/SimulinkR .

      In this work a vector analysis for a previously designed four-phase induction machine (4P-IM) is addressed. The set of equations that models the 4P-IM is developed and used to obtain simulations of the machine performance when it is started with a balanced four-phase voltage system which is obtained with a special transformer arrangement. The topology of a four-phase voltage source inverter (4P-VSI) is analyzed prior to be connected to the machine. Simulations and experimental results are obtained when the 4P-IM is started with the 4P-VSI.

      l trabajo presenta el proceso completo de diseño y construcción de un convertidor electrónico de potencia de 9 niveles como compensador estático de potencia reactiva en instalaciones industriales trifásicas. El trabajo abarca el dimensionamiento y montaje de la etapa de potencia compuesta por 24 módulos de transistores bipolares de compuerta aislada (IGBTs) de 150A y 1 200V cada uno y por 3 disipadores de aluminio, como así también todo el diseño y desarrollo de las tarjetas de adquisición, disparo y control necesarias para manejar el convertidor a lazo cerrado. Las tarjetas de adquisición se diseñaron utilizando sensores de efecto Hall para tensión y corriente y transmisión entre la tarjeta de control y la etapa de potencia. Para el control del convertidor de diseñó una tarjeta basada en un arreglo de lógica programable (FPGA) interconectada con un procesador digital de señales (DSP) que permite la alta velocidad de procesamiento requerida para probar distintas técnicas de control. El convertidor es controlado por modulación de ancho de pulso (PWM) conmutando a una frecuencia de 10kHz y pudiendo ser conectado a tensiones de hasta 3kV

      El trabajo presenta el proceso completo de diseño y construcción de un motor trifásico de una sola espira. El motor es destinado para uso como máquina normal con la ventaja de trabajar a tensión próxima a cero. Se presenta el dimensionamiento y montaje del devanado se realiza el análisis de la respuesta ante el sistema de alimentación nominal, esto es tensión cero, respuestas ante condiciones de funcionamiento en vacío, con carga y cortocircuito de barra bobina de sola espira, manteniendo parámetros mecánicos. Se demuestra que el sistema aporta, sobre el sistema contaminado, con reducciones de armónicos conforme cambie las características de la carga máquina.

      This paper presents an approach for designing an Intelligent Low Voltage DC Breaker (ILVDCB) using solid-state elements as its power components and an embedded processor for implementing control algorithms that command triggering of thyristors. A simplified model for arc voltage is used for designing the control strategies. Intelligent control algorithms such as Knowledge Based Fuzzy Control (KBFC), Neural Control and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) Controller are presented. Details on design and implementation in Matlab are discussed, as well as results and comparisons on the performance of every system.

      The objective of this work was to improve the quality life of a person with a disability, resulting from the amputation of a hand (wrist disarticulation), through the development and construction of a prototype of robot hand myoelectric; that means, that can to command by EMG signals (electromyography), but with the advantage that imply his construction to local level, because it avoids resorting to the importation of similar technology devices. Certainly the development of a technological prototype at a national level is not easy and our case was no exception, because was confronted several difficulties during the process, especially economic and the availability of some components; however, although all the inconveniences the prototype MROBI (Intelligent Robot Hand), became a reality. In the development of the same, three areas were fused to be exact, electromedicine, through analog channels constituted by instrumental amplifiers, which are responsible for the registration of biosignals, the development of software, both of microcontrollers, core processing (DSP) and subsequent control of the robot hand, as well as of the software of the PC for the monitoring of the biosignals registered and, Finally, the Mechatronics with the design and mechanical construction of the robot hand. Obtained as a result in a prototype of the three-fingered hand and wrist rotating, which can be commanded by pulses of EMG signal, each finger has a force sensor (FSR) to control the pressure exercised by the hand over the objects. © 2012 IEEE.

      In this paper we present the first stage of a new approach to improve the precision and recall of the content-based image retrieval task. To do this, we aim to combine three colour features, RGB and HSV histograms, and MPEG-7 Colour Layout Descriptor. To perform the combination, we propose to use an approximation based on Borda Voting-Schemes. Under that the Borda Voting-Schemes needs at least three votes to perform the combination, we intend to use the K-Nearest Neighbors methods to select the candidate images, given a query image. In the second stage, we¿ll implement our approach using at least three image databases.

      In this paper we present the partial results obtained with a new approach to combine HSV and RGB histograms and MPEG-7 CLD descriptor. The combination was conducted using Borda Voting-Schemes in three databases: Wang, ZuBud an UW. Despite the poor initial classification performed with CLD descriptor, our proposal has achieved good results for the Wang database (82.66 %), outperforming the precision of HSV (72.33 %) and RGB histograms (79.33 %), and CLD descriptor (53 %). In the other databases (ZuBud and UW) the combination approach was unable to perform a significant improvement.       En este trabajo se presenta un estudio sobre el Glaucoma considerando que en el Ecuador se manifiesta como causa de discapacidad visual en porcentajes considerables, teniendo presente que no se han realizado estudios previos sobre éste tema por lo tanto tampoco se ha generado un plan de control y tratamiento, sabiendo que una de las maneras de controlar ésta enfermedad es mediante dispositivos de drenaje, los cuales siguen en constante estudio de funcionamiento y mejoras, pero que no accesibles para todos, sin embargo, en Centro y Sudamérica se plantean estudios en comunidades científicas, especialmente dentro del campo de la medicina, por lo que, con el uso de nuevas ciencias como la bioingeniería, la electromedicina, son muestras de que la ingeniería podría ayudar a plantear nuevos diseños, modelos y mediante simulaciones optimizar los implantes de estos dispositivos.

      Abstract¿In this article, we propose a new approach to generate tools (assistive technology) for supporting education of children with disabilities in the first three levels of school. In the model proposed, we included the students of the last years of engineering careers, the experts of special education, the children with disabilities, and the teachers in charge of courses, such as: Artificial Intelligence, Computer Architecture and Electronics. The new approach presented in the model is the creation of an educational pace with two learning possibilities. In the first one, the university students learn about the application of new ideas to help children with disabilities, and how to work in multi-disciplinary teams. In the second one, the work model helps generate social conscience in the communities where the special education centers are placed. The model has been proved in the development of 31 tools for children with visual and hearing disabilities and cerebral palsy. At the present time, 25 tools are used in three centers of special education, hile 6 being are analyzed for further modifications.

Los datos evaluados responden a una clasificación de diversas discapacidades en base a planteamientos de la Misión Manuela Espejo, a su vez categorizada por edad, sexo y ubicación geográfica dentro de los cantones de la provincia azuayos. La Universidad Politécnica Salesiana ha trabajado activamente en el área de inclusión educativa para niños y niñas con discapacidades, por lo que se pretende justificar de mejor manera los campos de acción, seguimiento y establecimiento de una guía para el desarrollo de prototipos presentes y futuros, cumpliendo con necesidades reales y coherentes con las discapacidades de mayor alcance, detectadas.

      Resumen: La especificación estandarizada de la estructura de los objetos de aprendizaje permite gestionar la meta-información que en ellos se incluye, lo que posibilita utilizar sistemas de clasificación para categorizar dichos objetos y utilizarlos con fines específicos. Uno de estos fines es proporcionar recursos didácticos adaptados a las preferencias cognitivas del alumno. Para situar al objeto de aprendizaje en una categoría que describa éste fin, es necesario contar con una teoría o modelo de aprendizaje que determine las categorías y que proporcione las características y usos que se asignen al recurso, partiendo de la categoría a la que pertenece. No obstante, solo si se efectúa una clasificación óptima se logrará que el estudiante experimente un aprendizaje eficiente cuando acceda a los contenidos. A partir de esto, en este artículo se presenta una herramienta de soporte para que los autores de objetos de aprendizaje realicen una clasificación de forma más eficiente.       Abstract. In this article, we have studied the possibility of applying Borda and Fuzzy Borda voting schemes to combine semantic role labeling systems. To better select the correct semantic role, among those provided by different experts, we have introduced two measures: the first one calculates the overlap between labeled sentences, whereas the second one adds different scoring levels depending on the verbs that have been parsed.       Resumen: El proceso de recuperación de imágenes es una tarea de gran interés en el área informática. Las técnicas empleadas por los más conocidos buscadores como Google, Yahoo, Altavista y otros, se basan en la búsqueda de textos próximos a las imágenes solicitadas. Este tipo de métodos es susceptible a errores, ya que cerca de la imagen se pueden encontrar palabras que no guarden relación alguna con el contenido buscado. Por todo esto, es fundamental contar con métodos que realicen una verdadera búsqueda a nivel de contenido de la imagen. En este artículo se aplica la técnica de extracción de características basada en histogramas a color, con el objetivo de obtener imágenes similares a una muestra aleatoria dada. De igual forma, se propone clasificar imágenes usando un modelo basado en Máxima Entropía. Este modelo permite crear una distribución de probabilidad basado en las características de la imagen, esto es, los bins del histograma de color.
